Since 1981, Deena McMahon has made a difference in the lives of adults, children, adolescents, couples, families and mental health professionals in Minnesota, throughout the nation and in Canada.
She has spoken nationally and internationally on the dynamics of attachment, brain development and early trauma. She works with a diverse group of clients, including those from the African American, Native American, Hmong, Hispanic and Somali communities.
Skilled Expert Witness in Civil, Criminal, Juvenile and Family Courts
Ms. McMahon performs forensic assessments and frequently serves as an expert witness in court proceedings regarding permanency placements, child custody and other issues. She is experienced and skilled in court.
- She has served as an expert witness in Hague Convention international child custody cases.
- She has been designated a Qualified Expert Witness under the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA).
- She provided a transition plan for a child whose case was heard by the United States Supreme Court.
- She provided assessments of dozens of people who suffered childhood sexual abuse by Jesuit priests. The case that resulted was one of the largest settlements against a Catholic Diocese in the United States.

She is noted for her work in the areas of adoption, attachment therapy and childhood sexual abuse. Ms. McMahon wrote the Child Development section for Minnesota's District Court Bench Book, the document judges rely on for best practice. She has also developed a children’s mental health curriculum which is required statewide for foster care licensing CEU.
