For example, Ms. McMahon was hired as a consultant by a Minnesota county to coordinate the work of several groups that worked with adopted children, including child protection, foster care, and permanency planning. These separate organizations all made decisions about the children, but they had no clear understanding of how these decisions affected one another.
Ms. McMahon helped them find a way to collaborate more effectively by analyzing their process from the client’s perspective.

A Mediation Model
Ms. McMahon’s consultation is about trying to build consensus and solve problems based on the needs of the client family. It’s a mediation model of conflict resolution.

For example, in disputed custody cases, all parties usually have firmly held beliefs about the right way to proceed. Ms. McMahon helps everyone involved stay focused on what’s best for the child, not on what’s fair for the adults.
