Transition Planning for Children
Deena McMahon, LICSW, MSW, is experienced in creating transition plans for children who must be moved from one household to another due to custody disputes, adoption or other reasons. She trains professionals on Child-Centered Transitions in the Child Welfare system. She has written transition plans for children involved in highly contested, high-profile cases.
Transition Plan for a Case Decided by the U.S. Supreme Court
Ms. McMahon created a transition plan for Baby Veronica when she was moved from her biological father’s home to her adoptive parents’ home after years of litigation, including a decision by the United States Supreme Court in 2013.
Transition planning involves assessing and supporting the child, the relinquishing family and the receiving family. Ms. McMahon assesses all the parties involved and consults about the child’s vulnerabilities. She creates a plan based on established best practices that provides specific direction on whether the transition should take place.
